First: Definition and Duration of Connected Madd

Connected madd (madd muttasil) is the elongation that occurs when a hamzah follows a madd letter within the same word.

It is called 'connected' because the madd letter and the hamzah are connected within a single word.

The duration of connected madd is four or five counts.

Second: Examples of Connected Madd

Connected madd occurs with all three madd letters: alif, wāw, and yāʼ. Here are some examples:

• 1 - Connected madd with alif, e.g.: • ﴿ٱلأسْمَآءِ﴾ – the hamzah follows the alif in the same word. • ﴿وَءَابَآءَهُمۡ﴾ • ﴿ٱلۡأَنۢبِيَآء﴾
• 2 - Connected madd with wāw, e.g.: • ﴿ٱلسُّوٓءَ﴾ – the hamzah follows the wāw in the same word. • ﴿تَبُوٓأَ﴾ • ﴿لِيَسُُٔوا﴾
• 3 - Connected madd with yāʼ, e.g.: • ﴿مَّرِيٓٔٗا﴾ – the hamzah follows the yāʼ in the same word. • ﴿ٱلنَّسِيٓءُ﴾ • ﴿خَطِيَٓٔتِي﴾
