First: Articulation Point of the Letter Yāʼ Maddiyyah:
Yāʼ Maddiyyah: is the yāʼ with sukoon (non-vowelled) preceded by a letter with a kasrah (i-sound). It originates from the oral and throat cavity (Al-jawf), with vibration of the vocal cords in the larynx, accompanied by lowering of the lower jaw and raising of the middle of the tongue, as shown in the diagram.
Second: Most Important Characteristics of Yāʼ Maddiyyah:
Its primary feature is istifāl (non-elevation of the back of the tongue).
In the image of the articulation point of Yāʼ Maddiyyah, it is observed that the back of the tongue is lowered, which is the essence of Istifāl. This is accompanied by an opening of the throat, making the letter light (Muraqaq) when pronounced.

Third: Pronunciation of Yāʼ Maddiyyah through Qur’anic Examples:

Fourth: Common Mistakes in Pronouncing Yāʼ Maddiyyah:
- • Not raising the middle of the tongue sufficiently, producing a weak sound similar to an inclined Alif, as in: ﴿نَسۡتَعِينُ﴾.
- • Pronouncing it heavily(tafkhīm), especially when adjacent to a heavy letter, as in: ﴿ٱلۡعَظِيمُ﴾. Correct way: ﴿ٱلۡعَظِيمُ﴾.
- • Blending its sound with Ghunnah (nasal sound), which is called nasalization by allowing part of its sound to pass through the nose, especially near Nūn or Mīm, as in: ﴿ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ﴾.
- • Pressing excessively on the middle of the tongue, making it sound doubled, as in: ﴿ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِيمَ﴾.
- • Over-waving its sound especially when it is prolonged, as in: ﴿ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ﴾. Correct: ﴿ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ﴾. Allah says: ﴿هُدٗى لِّلۡمُتَّقِينَ﴾.
