Etiquettes Related to the Qur’an and Its Recitation

[First: Etiquettes of Learning the Quran:]

There are etiquettes for learning the Quran that a learner should observe, including:

  • 1. تجنبُ الأسباب الشاغلة عن تعلم كتاب الله عز وجل، والإقبالُ عليه بنشاط وهمة عالية، يقول الله تعالى: ﴿يَٰيَحۡيَىٰ خُذِ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ بِقُوَّةٖ﴾ [مريم: 12].
  • 2. Respecting the teacher by being humble towards him, looking at him with respect, not raising his voice in front of him without need, not talking or laughing excessively without reason, not playing with his hands or surroundings, facing him, and not turning away except for a need.
  • 3. Being polite with fellow learners, treating them with kindness and respect.
  • 4. Preserving the Mushaf (Quranic copy) and protecting it from anything inappropriate, such as placing it on the ground, sitting on it, folding it, or using it as a holder for papers.

Second: Etiquettes of Reciting the Quran:

There are etiquettes for reciting the Quran that a reciter should observe, including:

  • 1. Purifying one's body and clothes and choosing a clean place.
  • 2. Using a miswak (tooth-stick) before recitation.
  • 3. Choosing a place free from distractions.
  • 4. Seeking refuge in Allah from the accursed devil before starting recitation.
  • 5. Pondering over the verses of the Quran and understanding their meanings.
  • 6. Acting upon Allah's commands in the Quran; when passing by a verse of glorification, he glorifies Allah, and when passing by a verse of seeking forgiveness, he seeks forgiveness.
  • 7. Observing the prostrations of recitation (sujood al-tilawah) by prostrating when reaching a verse of prostration.
  • 8. Beautifying one's voice with the Quran without violating the rules of Tajweed.

Third: General Etiquettes Related to the Quran:

  • 1. Acting upon the Quran and embodying its morals.
  • 2. Maintaining the demeanor of the people of the Quran by frequently remembering Allah, contemplating deeply, avoiding idle talk, being keen on acts of obedience, and competing in acts of closeness to Allah.
  • 3. Being keen on teaching and spreading the Quran and serving it and its people, following the advice of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): "Convey from me even if it is one verse." [Bukhari].
  • 4. Maintaining a daily portion of the Quran and being cautious of neglecting or forgetting it.
  • 5. Reciting the Quran in prayer, especially in the last part of the night, following Allah's command: ﴿وَمِنَ ٱلَّيۡلِ فَتَهَجَّدۡ بِهِۦ نَافِلَةٗ لَّكَ عَسَىٰٓ أَن يَبۡعَثَكَ رَبُّكَ مَقَامٗا مَّحۡمُودٗا﴾ [Al-Isra: 79]. If one misses their portion at night, they can make it up during Duha time.
  • 6. Protecting one's stomach from consuming prohibited food, protecting one's tongue from idle talk, protecting one's hands from causing harm, and protecting one's feet from walking towards sins.
  • 7. Observing the practices of the righteous predecessors when completing the Quran by gathering for it, reading Surah Al-Fatihah and the first five verses of Surah Al-Baqarah, and making supplication afterwards; for completing the Quran is one of the occasions where supplications are answered by Allah's permission.
