Dhāl

Video of the Letter Dhāl:

This short video presents the articulation and characteristics of the letter Dhāl, demonstrating its correct pronunciation with Qur’anic examples, and highlighting the most common pronunciation errors made by readers.

First: The Articulation Point of the Letter Dhāl:

The letter Dhāl is articulated from the tip of the tongue touching the tips of the upper incisors. It shares its articulation point with the letters Ẓā’ and Thā’. The reader must slightly advance the tongue from between the teeth for proper pronunciation, as shown in the image.

Second: The Main Characteristics of Dhāl:

Rikhāwah (Flexibility), Jahr (Audibility), and Istifāl (Lowering).

The image shows an open space between the tongue tip and the tips of upper teeth, which allows the sound to flow without being cut off immediately—this is 'Rakhāwah'(Flexibility).

Dhāl is an audible letter(Majhoor), meaning that there is no extra breath accompanies its sound.

Third: Pronouncing Dhāl in Different States through Qur’anic Examples:

You can click on the word to hear the correct pronunciation.
First: Dhāl in a non-vowelled (Sukūn):
أَذْ أُذْ إِذْ
﴿أَذۡكُرۡكُمۡ﴾ ﴿ٱذۡكُرُواْ﴾ ﴿ٱذۡهَبُواْ﴾
Second: Dhāl with short vowels (Harakat):
ذَ ذُ ذِ
﴿ذَلُولٗا﴾ ﴿ذُرِّيَّتِي﴾ ﴿ذِكۡرٗا﴾
Third: Dhāl with long vowels (Madd letters):
ذا ذو ذي
﴿ذَٰلِكَ﴾ ﴿ذُوقُواْ﴾ ﴿ٱلَّذِي﴾
Third: Dhāl with long vowels (Madd letters):
أَذَّ أَذُّ أذِّ
﴿ٱلذَّهَبِ﴾ ﴿ٱلذُّكُورَ﴾ ﴿ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰ﴾

Fourth: Common Mistakes in Pronouncing Dhāl:

  • 1.Pronouncing it close to Thā’, especially when non-vowelled (Sakin), by excessively pushing the tongue out when pronouncing it: ﴿وَٱذۡكُرُواْ﴾. The correct pronunciation is: ﴿وَٱذۡكُرُواْ﴾. Allah Almighty says: ﴿وَٱذۡكُرُواْ ٱللَّهَ فِيٓ أَيَّامٖ مَّعۡدُودَٰتٖ﴾.
  • 2.Pronouncing it like Zāy: ﴿ٱلَّذِينَ﴾ the correct pronunciation: ﴿ٱلَّذِينَ﴾. Allah Almighty says: ﴿صِرَٰطَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَنۡعَمۡتَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ﴾.
  • 3.Merging it with Tā’, as in: ﴿وَإِذۡ تَأَذَّنَ﴾. The correct pronunciation: ﴿وَإِذۡ تَأَذَّنَ﴾.
  • 5.Pronouncing it heavily (Mufakham), especially when adjacent to a heavy letter, such as: ﴿ذَرَّةٖ﴾. The correct way is to keep it light (Muraqqaq): ﴿ذَرَّةٖ﴾. Allah Almighty says: ﴿إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَظۡلِمُ مِثۡقَالَ ذَرَّةٖ﴾.
