Non-elongated Yā’ Letter Video:
This video demonstrates the Makhraj and characteristics of Yā’, and how to practically pronounce it with Quranic examples and the most common mistakes that reciters make when pronouncing it.
First: The Articulation Point of the non-elongated Yā’
The non-elongated Yā’ is articulated from the middle of the tongue along with the corresponding part of the upper palate. It shares its articulation point with the letters Jīm (ج) and Shīn (ش), as shown in the image.
Second: Main Characteristics of non-elongated Yā’
Rakhāwah (flexibility) and Istifāl (Lowering).
The articulation image of Yā’ shows a gap between the middle of the tongue and the upper palate, allowing the sound to flow when pronouncing it, so the sound is not cut abruptly. This is the essence of the 'flexibilty'(Rakhāwah) characteristic.
وحرف الياء غير المدية من حروف “الاستفال”؛ بمعنى أن أقصى اللسان يكون منخفضًا عند النطق به، فيُنطق مرققًا.

Third: Pronunciation of non-elongated Yā’ in Various States with Quranic Examples
You can click on the word to hear the correct pronunciation.
| First: Yā’ in non-vowelled(Sukūn) state: | ||
|---|---|---|
| أَيْ | – | – |
| ﴿أَيۡنَمَا﴾ | ||
| Second: Yā’ with short vowels (Harakat): | ||
|---|---|---|
| يَ | يُ | يِ |
| ﴿يَعۡمَلۡ﴾ | ﴿يُؤۡمِنُونَ﴾ | ﴿مَعَٰيِشَ﴾ |
| Third: Yā’ with long vowels (Madd letters): | ||
|---|---|---|
| يا | يو | يي |
| ﴿يَابِسٍ﴾ | ﴿يُوقِنُونَ﴾ | ﴿يُحۡيِيكُمۡ﴾ |
| Fourth: Yā’ with shaddah(when it is doubled): | ||
|---|---|---|
| أَيَّ | أَيُّ | أَيِّ |
| ﴿أَيَّامٗا﴾ | ﴿أَيُّهَا﴾ | ﴿طَيِّبٗا﴾ |
Fourth: Common Mistakes in Pronouncing Yā’ (Non-Elongated)
- 1. Pressing too hard on the middle of the tongue, especially when the letter is doubled, preventing the flow of the sound, e.g., ﴿إِيَّاكَ﴾.
- 2. Pronouncing it heavily, especially when adjacent to heavy letters, e.g., ﴿يَغۡفِرُ﴾.
- 3. Mixing its sound with Ghunnah (a nasal sound), e.g., ﴿قُرَيۡشٍ﴾.
